About the Navigators
Specially-trained 'Navigators' based in Hull Royal Infirmary, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital (Grimsby) reach out to patients aged between 11 and 35 who have suffered injuries linked to violence.
The Navigators build relationships with these young people, guiding them to local services and providing ongoing support to help them make positive changes in their lives.
Helen and Shona - our Hull-based Navigators - shared a moving case study from a female patient.
A Caring and Considerate Experience
"I recently made a report to the police regarding the domestic abuse my family and I experienced. They advised that I to go to the hospital for my injuries to make sure there was nothing serious going unnoticed.
"The next day, Shona contacted me and explained who she was and the services the Navigators offer. This was a very relaxed phone call – as if I was talking to a friend I hadn't seen for a while and we were catching up. I instantly felt a connection with Shona. We then arranged for her and Helen to visit me at my mum’s house.
"Their kindness and sensitivity concerning my circumstances was absolutely phenomenal. Their continued support with anything and everything is flawless. The relationship I've built with Shona is one I will treasure.
"Whenever I am anxious, stressed or worried I know I can contact Shona and she will contact me at her earliest convenience, which is always the same day. Shona reassures me and helps me think logically and break situations down. She has also met my children and is so kind with them and interacts with them so beautifully.
"I cannot thank the Navigators enough for their continuous support and care. I absolutely needed them and I'm so lucky to have the opportunity to be supported by caring, kind, considerate people who listen to me and make me feel important and heard. There will never be enough words to show how grateful me and my family are. Thank you."
