The mum feels like she is getting her daughter back.

Note: To keep the young person's identity confidential, we refer to them as 'K' throughout the example below. Our South Bank Navigators are based in Grimsby and Scunthorpe and provided the below case study.

About the Navigators

Specially-trained 'Navigators' based in Hull Royal Infirmary, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital (Grimsby) reach out to patients aged between 11 and 35 who have suffered injuries linked to violence.

The Navigators build relationships with these young people, guiding them to local services and providing ongoing support to help them make positive changes in their lives.

Background

K, a 13-year-old girl, attended A&E after being assaulted in a local park. She was lured to the park by peers and encouraged to consume alcohol. Her peers assaulted her, filmed the incident and posted it on social media.

Afterwards, K attended school and discovered that one of the peers who had assaulted her was attending the same school. This resulted in K refusing to go to school.

The Navigators offered K ongoing emotional support. Additional support has been offered to K's mum, to try and make sure that her daughter can resume school in the new term. Trauma-informed sessions are also being carried out to help K build her resilience and self-esteem.

With her mum's permission, K has been provided with a mobile phone and has downloaded the HollyGuard app. This smartphone app provides enhanced levels of protection. Every 5 seconds, the platform updates your precise location based on your speed and movement activity to identify where you are once an alert has been raised.

K's mum said that she "feels like she is getting her daughter back" and has noticed a clear difference in K's behaviour over recent weeks.

To advocate for both mum and daughter, the Navigators are attending multi-agency meetings with partner agencies. Further work is being carried out to encourage K to work towards her life ambitions.
