About Iron Goals
Led by the Iron Foundation, Iron Goals is a programme designed to get children and young people physically active.
Using the power of the Scunthorpe United FC badge, the intervention engages young people with football and educates them on topical issues that they face on the streets, such as knife crime, exploitation and anti-social behaviour.
Background
Before Iron Goals Crosby, H often spent time on the streets with peers who were involved with anti-social behaviour.
When H first joined, he struggled with the structure of the sessions and found it difficult to follow instructions. He was influenced by his past experiences and often behaved defiantly.
Lessons from Football
Iron Goals Crosby not only improved H’s football skills but helped him reduce his anti-social behaviour. It gave him a positive outlet for his energy and fostered a sense of discipline and responsibility.
The sessions focused on H’s skill development, teamwork and discipline. Coaches acted as positive role models, helping H learn the value of respect, cooperation and responsibility – on and off the field.
With this encouragement and guidance, H began to engage more, recognising the value of teamwork and discipline.
A Changed Attitude
As H's skills improved, so did his self-esteem. He gained confidence through better co-ordination and teamwork, understanding that success requires commitment and respect. His attitude towards discipline and responsibility began to change, both in football and his daily life.
Through football, H formed new friendships, replacing his negative social interactions with more positive ones. The sessions provided a safe environment where H could build his confidence, reducing his involvement in anti-social behaviour. Instead of spending time on the streets, he focused on football and team activities.
Becoming a Role Model
H's family and school noticed positive changes, with him becoming more responsible and respectful. His involvement in football also had a ripple effect in the community, where he became a role model for his peers, inspiring others to join the sessions and make better choices.
Reflections
H's journey shows how football can provide a constructive outlet for young people, helping them move away from anti-social behaviour.
Through the Iron Goals Crosby sessions, H has developed essential life skills, gained confidence, and become more engaged with his community. This has led to a positive shift in his behaviour and outlook on his future.
