About Box Smart
Box Smart is a collaborative approach with the Orchard Park Neighbourhood Policing Team to reduce youth anti-social behaviour on the Orchard Park estate in Hull. It aims to use boxing to give children and young people a positive mindset and goals for the future.
Background
Brothers J and T have been involved with Box Smart since late 2024.
Before they joined, Humberside Police’s neighbourhood officers spoke to the brothers about their anti-social behaviour linked to alcohol and property damage.
Because they had shown an interest in boxing at primary school, J and T were referred into Box Smart.
Positive Contributions
Though J and T have only just started their journey with Box Smart, lead coach Bob Beautyman is already impressed.
The brothers have a 100% participation rate and contribute positively to group discussions. They are also keeping their distance from groups on their estate who are linked with crime.
Feedback
When asked about his experience with Box Smart, J said, "The thing I enjoy about Box Smart is being with Bob and having the chance to get back in the ring again.
"It’s a good route for me to get rid of aggression and keep out of trouble. I don’t particularly enjoy the learning activities as I want to be active. But that said, I think they have benefited me in terms of improving my mood and attitude."
T added, "I know some of the other kids from school and it’s been good to be able to access the project together. My favourite activities have been the boxing, runs in the park, and learning how to cook.
"My ambition is to improve my mental health, stop getting into trouble, and learn some new skills."
