About Fair Play League

Fair Play League runs free football sessions in Grimsby and Immingham for young people aged 12 to 19.

Young people are diverted to the activity through local schools, youth justice and the Young People's Support Services outreach team.

This project is delivered by North East Lincolnshire Council in partnership with Grimsby Town Football Club.

Background

This case study examines a young participant’s experience in a Fair Play session held at the West Marsh Community Centre.

Initially, P was drawn to the sessions due to a lack of other activities in the local area and a desire to engage in more physical activities. The sessions provided an outlet for combating boredom while fostering personal growth and community engagement.

Experience and Enjoyment

P enjoys attending the sessions for several reasons:

  • Competitive Opportunities: The ability to compete in tournaments against other local Fair Play teams.
  • Skill Development: Acquiring valuable life skills, such as teamwork, communication, and learning to handle both winning and losing.
  • Social Interaction: Building connections with peers and being part of a community atmosphere.

Path to Participation

P discovered the sessions through their local youth centre. Staff directed them to the Wednesday evening sessions specifically tailored to their age group. Mikey, a coach, played a pivotal role in welcoming and informing P about the sessions.

The Role of a Coach

The coaches are highly regarded by Fair Play participants. Positive feedback includes:

  • Organised Matches: The structure and flow of games are well executed.
  • Clear Communication: Coaches effectively relay information about additional sessions and tournament opportunities.
  • Supportive Atmosphere: Coaches create an environment helpful to learning and growth.

Additional Support and Signposting

Youth workers have connected P to other opportunities, such as boxing sessions. These supplementary activities broaden P’s engagement in sports and fitness.

Session Benefits

P reports several advantages from attending Fair Play sessions:

  • Health and Fitness: Improved physical health through regular activity.
  • Skill Development: Learning new technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Challenge and Growth: Facing diverse opponents in tournaments pushes them to improve and adapt.

Reflections

The Fair Play sessions at West Marsh demonstrate a successful approach to youth engagement, addressing boredom while fostering health, fitness, and personal growth.

This example highlights the importance of structured, accessible activities in building community and developing life skills among young people.
