About White Ribbon

A UK charity, White Ribbon aims to prevent VAWG by addressing the root causes of men’s violence against women.

These causes include harmful attitudes, behaviours and systems around rigid gender norms and negative expressions of masculinity that uphold gender inequality and gender-based violence.

The 2024 theme for White Ribbon Day is ‘It starts with men.’ White Ribbon is encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women, and to each other, to transform harmful cultures.

White Ribbon Day takes place on the 25 November and is followed by 16 days of action. Please visit their website for more information and to register your interest.

Humber-wide Campaign

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Humberside and the Humber VPP are launching a campaign to raise awareness and specifically target male perpetrators of domestic abuse.

DA Campaign

To highlight the pathways for change, campaign materials - like the one above - will be circulated by local radio, buses, digital boards in high footfall locations and social media.

The campaign will launch on White Ribbon Day (25 November) and run for the following 16 days of action.

Jonathan Evison, Chair of the Humber VPP, said:

“Together, we want to raise the profile of abuse against women and do something about it by calling to action all places where women need to feel - and be - safe from harm. We all need to call out inappropriate behaviour and have those difficult conversations, to reverse the trends of this unacceptable behaviour and really champion change.”

Remember that help is available and change is possible. If you're concerned that your behaviour is damaging your relationship - or you believe a friend, colleague or partner is showing signs of abuse - please visit the OPCC's support page below.

Why is White Ribbon Day Important?

  • 70% of women in the UK say they have experienced sexual harassment in public. (APPG for UN Women, 2021)
  • 3 in 5 women have experienced sexual harassment, bullying or verbal abuse in the workplace. (Trade Unions Congress, 2023)
  • Nearly a quarter of girls in mixed sex schools said they had experiences of unwanted sexual touching in school. (EVAW, 2023)
  • Locally, from a survey of over 1,400 women, 98% had been subjected to violence or abuse. (OPCC)

How Your Organisation Can Get Involved

Safer Hull recently hosted a powerful event focused on ending VAWG. In response to valuable feedback, a new steering group is forming to support White Ribbon locally.

The group aims to:

  • Provide guidance and resources to those passionate about ending VAWG
  • Engage men with the White Ribbon campaign
  • Promote relevant events in the region

On Wednesday 22 January (10am - 12pm), the steering group is hosting an online discussion about the White Ribbon campaign. This meeting will bring together people from across the Humber to find shared opportunities to prevent VAWG.

You can book your free place here.

Please download and share the below PDF to help promote this important meeting.

If you or your organisation are interested in joining the steering group, please contact Violence Prevention Officer Brandon Fuller via the button below.

The Role of Trusted Adults

Positive male role models play a vital role in shaping young minds. By offering guidance and support, they can help boys and young men build healthy relationships and challenge harmful stereotypes.

Visit our ‘Listen to Us!’ campaign for tips on how to have open and honest conversations with young people.

Final Thoughts

Violence against women and girls has been described as a national epidemic. Anyone can intervene and support victims of VAWG - please join us in championing the White Ribbon campaign.
