What is the Public Health Approach?
A data-driven framework, the public health approach looks at needs holistically, focusing on prevention and reducing inequalities between groups. It begins by understanding needs at a population level, asking questions such as who is affected, what is happening, where, why and how.
Instead of only responding to immediate issues, it addresses the underlying causes, often referred to as the social determinants of health. It also considers the impact of factors such as Adverse Childhood Experiences and challenging community environments.
The approach encourages organisations to work in partnership across systems and with communities - because bringing together our varied expertise, experiences and skills helps us achieve better outcomes.
