Background

In 2025, the Humber VPP funded a national pilot programme for Youth Health Champions specialising in violence prevention and reduction.

Some of the graduates chose to further develop their campaigns aimed at reducing serious violence. One group had the brilliant idea of challenging the stigma against young women (aged 18 – 35) seeking divorce from an unhealthy or abusive marriage.

You can read about the campaign and its development on this page. We’d also appreciate any feedback about the initiative – click the green button below.

About the Campaign

Despite progress in gender equality, many young women still face stigma when they apply for a divorce. This can be shaped by societal beliefs or cultural values.

These stigmas - and the concern about gaining financial independence - can make some women feel pressured to stay in an abusive relationship.

By signposting them to organisations that offer support and advice, this campaign reassures them:

  • You are equal
  • You are respected
  • You are seen

Why This Matters

According to a 2024 survey from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, 82% of respondents said they did not know where to go to report harassment, abuse or violence.

Promoting the Campaign

To help promote the campaign, the Champions created perfume testers with QR codes linking to this webpage.

They chose perfume testers as they can be easily handed out at public events and people usually keep hold of them (in pockets or bags). The wording is subtle; although it features the campaign name, it does not reference abuse or unhealthy relationships – which may spark suspicions.
