A new programme, commissioned by the Humber Violence Prevention Partnership, has launched to support young people in Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe who have been injured or traumatised by violence.
The 'Navigators' programme will be delivered in partnership with NHS Humber Health Partnership, Tigers Trust and The Blue Door. Specially trained professionals - known as Navigators - will reach out to young people attending Hull Royal Infirmary, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby following incidents of violence, including knife crime.
To help the young people make positive changes in their lives, the Navigators will build relationships with them, direct them to local services and offer ongoing support.
How the Programme Works
The Navigators will:
- Approach young people aged 11 to 35 who attend A&E departments or are admitted to hospital wards following a violent incident. Young people can also be referred to the service by hospital staff or can request support themselves.
- Assess the young person's immediate needs and provide support to protect them from harm.
- Make referrals to support services in the community, such as refuges, housing and drug and alcohol services.
- Continue to offer support, including mentoring and life skills training, for as long as the young person needs it.
Navigating Towards Positive Choices
This initiative is a significant step towards preventing and reducing serious violence in the Humber region. By providing support and guidance to young people at a crucial time, the Navigators programme can help them break the cycle of violence and build a safer future.
