Overview

The University of Hull has developed a guide to support schools that wish to review and update their behaviour and relationship policies to incorporate trauma-informed approaches. Trauma-informed approaches help create safe, supportive environments where all students and staff can thrive.

Keep reading to learn more about the research – and how your school can get involved with the next phase.

Real-world Approach to Trauma Informed Practice

These recommendations are drawn from the HU9 Pilot: a 3-year evaluation of trauma-informed approaches in a Hull primary school. The school was selected as it is based in an area with a high prevalence of domestic abuse and multiple unmet needs.

The guidance highlights key policy and practice considerations and offers a real-world approach to implementation, learning from the successes and challenges of the HU9 Pilot.

The HU9 Pilot’s ‘phase 2’ report revealed significant organisational change, with staff demonstrating increased confidence, compassion and understanding of trauma. The school has been instrumental in creating a safer, more inclusive environment for both children and adults – highlighting the importance of expert-led interventions in embedding trauma-informed practice.

Thank you to the participating school, their compassionate leaders and incredible staff.

How to Use the Guidance

Please note that the advice is flexible – schools may select and adapt sections to fit their unique context. Policies are most effective when they are developed collaboratively with students and staff and consistently applied across the whole school community.

How to Get Involved

We’re now looking for a small cohort of schools or educational settings across the Humber region who are interested in signing up to the next pilot phase and meet the eligibility criteria. This includes primary schools, secondary schools, alternative provisions and pupil referral units.
