Men’s Health Week (15 - 21 June) is a dedicated week that shines a spotlight on the unique health challenges affecting men and boys. It serves as an important reminder of the need to address health concerns proactively, encouraging men to take care of their wellbeing, make informed lifestyle choices, and seek appropriate support when needed.

This year’s focus comes at a particularly important time, with the development of England’s first Men’s Health Strategy, a proposed 10-year plan to improve the health and wellbeing of men and boys. The strategy focuses on reducing preventable illness, improving earlier diagnosis, strengthening mental health support, tackling harmful social norms, and creating more accessible, male-friendly health services. It also highlights key priorities including suicide prevention, cancer and wider physical health outcomes, substance use, and the importance of community support and connection.

This is particularly important given the significant health inequalities experienced by men, especially around mental health and suicide. In the UK, around three in four people who die by suicide are men, and suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50. Many men continue to face barriers to opening up or accessing support often linked to stigma, societal expectations, or feeling they need to cope alone.

Men’s Health Week provides a valuable opportunity for organisations and communities to start conversations, promote healthier lifestyles, raise awareness of available support, and encourage men to seek help for any health concerns they may be experiencing. It also gives us the chance to turn national ambition into meaningful local action, creating safer conversations, challenging stigma, promoting early intervention, and reinforcing a simple but powerful message: seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
